Virtualization

Virtualization refers to the technique of creating a logical view of data that appears unified and accessible, even though the underlying data may reside in multiple, disparate physical locations. Rather than physically moving or duplicating data into a central repository, virtualization enables users to query and interact with data in real time from various sources—whether on-premises databases, cloud storage, or third-party systems—through a single, abstracted layer. This approach allows for faster access to data, reduced duplication, and improved agility, since changes to underlying sources do not necessarily require reengineering pipelines or structures.

Virtualization plays a key role in modern data architecture by decoupling data consumption from data storage. It enables data engineers and analysts to work with near-real-time data without waiting for batch ingestion or ETL processing, which is particularly valuable in environments where speed, flexibility, or data freshness is critical. Tools that support data virtualization often come with capabilities such as metadata management, query optimization, security enforcement, and caching—ensuring that virtual views are not only accessible but performant and governed.

ER/Studio supports virtualization by enabling data architects to model both physical and virtual layers of the data architecture. It allows for the design and documentation of virtual data objects, such as views or semantic layers, alongside physical tables—providing a comprehensive map of how data flows and is consumed across systems. By modeling virtual assets, ER/Studio helps organizations clearly represent logical abstractions that are critical for self-service analytics, federated queries, and cloud-first architectures, ensuring a consistent and transparent data layer across the enterprise.
