Master File Table

The Master File Table (MFT) is a core component of the NTFS (New Technology File System) used in Windows operating systems. It acts as an index that stores information about every file and directory on an NTFS volume, including metadata such as file name, size, location, and permissions. Each of these entries in the MFT contains attributes that help the operating system access and manage files efficiently.

As the primary index for NTFS, the MFT supports quick retrieval of file attributes and helps maintain an organized file system. Any changes made to files such as creation, modification or deletion are recorded in the MFT. And that’s how it keeps track of the system’s file structure.

ER/Studio focuses on creating detailed data models that serve as blueprints for database development. These models capture metadata and help users build structured data models for databases, similar to how MFT organizes file data systematically.

Just as MFT maintains a structured index of files, ER/Studio Data Architect tools provide a structured approach to organizing database elements, such as tables, relationships and constraints. This structured view helps data architects design efficient database models, making information easier to access and manage.

MFT helps track and validate file information within a filesystem. In contrast, ER/Studio supports data governance and compliance by documenting database structures, through its comprehensive data modeling tools, securing data at the database level.

Therefore, both of these contribute to maintaining data reliability and consistency.
