Denormalization

Denormalization is a database optimization technique that adds controlled redundancy to improve performance.

Unlike normalization, which eliminates redundancy to maintain data integrity, denormalization reduces the number of joins required for queries, making data retrieval faster. It is commonly used in high-performance applications, such as reporting systems and real-time analytics, where quick access to data is more important than strict normalization.

Why Use Denormalization?

  • Reduces complex joins, improving read efficiency and query performance.
  • Makes aggregated data readily available for dashboards and queries.
  • Reduces the need for complex multi-table joins, making queries easier to write and maintain.
  • While it improves speed, it can increase storage use and require careful maintenance.

ER/Studio facilitates both the normalization and denormalization processes by providing robust tools to visually manage and document database structures effectively. With ER/Studio, data architects can model their data with the right balance between normalization and denormalization according to the specific performance requirements of their database systems.

The core capabilities for demormalization provided by ER/Studio are:

  • ER/Studio Data Architect offers users the ability to design and adjust schemas, balancing performance and data integrity.
  • With Documentation & Reporting in ER/Studio, users can capture why and how denormalization changes were made to provide teams with transparency and traceability.
  • ER/Studio also provides Performance Tuning & Optimization. It simulates database operations, helping evaluate and refine denormalization strategies.

With ER/Studio, organizations can apply denormalization strategically, making databases high-performing and scalable by keeping them well-documented while also minimizing potential risks.
