Data Governance

Data governance refers to the overarching framework of policies, roles, standards, and processes that guide how an organization manages, protects, and uses its data. The purpose of data governance is to ensure that data is accurate, consistent, secure, and compliant with internal requirements and external regulations. It defines responsibilities for data ownership and stewardship, establishes rules for data quality and access, and ensures traceability across systems. A strong data governance foundation reduces ambiguity, enhances trust in data, and supports better decision-making across the enterprise.

ER/Studio contributes to data governance efforts by enabling organizations to define and document data models, metadata, and business terminology in a structured, consistent way. Its business glossary allows users to capture and align business definitions with data assets, while its metadata management tools help enforce naming conventions and structural standards across systems.

ER/Studio also provides data lineage visualization, making it easier to trace how data moves and transforms across the environment. A major advantage of ER/Studio is its ability to integrate with leading governance platforms such as Microsoft Purview and Collibra, allowing organizations to synchronize metadata and business terms between modeling environments and broader governance ecosystems. This integration supports a more connected and scalable approach to enterprise data governance.
