データタイプ

In data modeling, a data type is a classification that defines the kind of values a column or attribute can store—such as integers, text, dates, or binary objects. Data types are a critical part of database design because they determine how data is stored, how much space it uses, how it can be queried, and how it integrates with other systems.

Choosing appropriate data types helps optimize storage, improve query performance, and maintain data integrity. For example, using a “DATE” type ensures only valid date values are stored, while an “INTEGER” restricts input to whole numbers.

Common Types of Data

  • Numeric Data Types: Used for storing whole numbers (integers) and decimal values (floats, decimals, etc.).
  • Character Data Types: Stores text-based information, including fixed-length (CHAR) and variable-length (VARCHAR) formats.
  • Date & Time Data Types: Used for timestamps, dates, and durations, essential for time-based analysis.
  • Boolean Data Type: Holds true/false (or yes/no) values, commonly used for logical operations.
  • Binary & Large Object Data Types: Store images, files, or unstructured data (BLOBs, CLOBs).

ER/Studio provides comprehensive support for data types across multiple database platforms, enabling accurate, platform-aware modeling. During logical modeling, designers can assign abstract data types, which ER/Studio then maps to database-specific physical types during implementation. This transition ensures compatibility with platforms like Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MySQL.

The tool also supports user-defined domains—custom data types that standardize business-specific formats and improve model consistency. ER/Studio’s validation features help designers ensure that data types are used consistently and appropriately, flagging mismatches that could cause performance or integration issues.

By supporting a wide range of native and custom data types, ER/Studio enables teams to build precise, efficient, and scalable data models that align with both technical requirements and business rules.
